International Alternative Networks

All over the globe, a variety of international alternative networks have surfaced to promote the growth of information and media. They may differ in their mission and structure, but they all share the same goal of democratizing communication and making reforms. These networks are distinguished by their non-commercial nature and their opposition to imperialist power mechanics.

These networks comprise people, non-profit organizations and native sites that connect local communities with regional and global links aimed at democratically distributing information. They also advocate for communication reform campaigns that seek to make local national, global and local communications media more accessible, inclusive and accountable. The projects are faced with many obstacles that include limited financial and technical support. However, they continue to develop the network of local-local connections that bypass imperialist power mechanics.

In the early nineties, a wide range of international alternative networks began to emerge in a variety of countries and regions. These networks were able to develop thanks to the confluence of social movements, especially from the Global South, mobilizing against US policies; and creative media groups that seized the new consumer production marketing channels.

These networks are increasingly important in areas where the main network is not available or is not the most popular option. This article proposes to categorize these networks, and highlights their key characteristics. This article is intended to aid researchers, activists, and others in gaining a better understanding of these networks, particularly their significance as a crucial part www.inafi-la.org/2019/12/01/comunidad-internacional-alternativa-de-instituciones-financieras/ of a global accessibility strategy for all.
